Hi, My name is Mike Symonds and I am the owner of Interactive Events. I have been designing and delivering Corporate Team Events and Training since 1992. I wanted to help people feel as though they belonged. I wanted to be the person who helped people have fun and connect with the people around them. I started my trade in 'education' working as a facilitator for Outward Bound. Running wilderness based personal development programs it was here that I learnt the power of learning through fun. I discovered many team based games and challenges, group dynamics and how to use 'action' and discovery' to build teams. When you are out in bush, miles from help and running low on water you need to know how to work as a team. Over the last 2 decades, I've learned and assembled tons of proven team building techniques and activities working as a corporate trainer and running my own business. My Moment of Truth! 3 years ago, when meeting with a client, they said, "Mike, what do you see as the secret of your success. The program you delivered was SO MUCH FUN and really helped us BUILD RELATIONSHIPS, but it doesn't appear to be rocket science!" Now I can tell you at the time I started to panic! "Oh no, they are wanting to run their own programs, and put us out of business!" Like every other team building provider I started blowing my own trumpet and saying things like "It looks easy, because we make it look easy" and "It's only because we have been doing it for years". After the meeting I got to thinking and decided to be totally honest with myself. "They were right! Sure I have been doing it for years, however it is easy! If you follow the steps that I have created anyone can do it!" That was when I started hiring staff to deliver my programs. Training and having other people deliver your games is a real eye opener. It taught me to identify the aspects of what makes a program successful. It showed me that it WASN'T ME that was FANTASTIC, it WAS THE PROCESS that I was following that worked. So that is how my DIY programs were born.
Some of Our Achievements Over the years we have worked with over 5000 participants in a variety of organisations from Not for Profits, to Franchises and Multi-National Companies. We have designed and delivered programs for Exxon Mobil, Hutchinsons, Sinclair Knight Merz, Cadbury's and heaps more ....
Above: An Office Olympics program we delivered for a Major Bank Human Resources department. This was a 2 hour event for 60 people. The great thing about this was the interaction after the event. People worked on the same floor as one another for 6 months, but never stopped to introduce themselves were now working together and interacting.
Above: A Mascot Leggo Drag Racer we delivered for Sinclair Knight Merz for 50 participants. This was a 1.5 hour event that produced great results in rewarding staff at the end of the year.
Above: We ran a 3 hour Race Around the World Activity for 100 people at Cadbury Schwepps. This activity is called Team Twister and is one of the Checkpoint Challenges. The guys at Cadbury said that they had done alot of these type of activities and that this was the best one that they had ever done!
It is this practical, day in day out experience that has allowed us to build the experience and skills to offer our programs as DIY. Many team building companies still have the 'owner' do the delivery. This way all of the program techniques are jealously stored in their heads. Our decision to allow other staff to deliver our programs forced us to create an easy, simplified process.
