The 4 Essential Ingredients

Activities for boosting employee engagement run the gamut from quiet and mild to decidedly raucous.  What employee engagement activities work the best?  And which ones should you use?  More importantly, which ones should you avoid?

Within the context of this article we can’t give you a top-ten list of activities for employee engagement, and we can’t give you a bottom-ten list either because – follow us very closely here – we don’t personally know your employees.  You do.  Or at least we hope you do.  But we can give you a timely warning about poorly-chosen activities:  they don’t work.

So let's have a look at what ingredients does make for a successful staff morale booster activity.

Four Keys to Successful Activities for Employee Engagement

Like a good table, employee engagement activities only work if they rest on four legs:  Significance, Appreciation, Connection, and Fun.

  • Significance.  The activity itself doesn’t have to be significant, but it should convey that your employees are significant.  One good way to do this is to choose an engagement activity that your workers will actually like.  Another way, as referenced in the example above, is to give mundane work a purpose:  helping the community or those in need will create a ripple effect of positive emotions, both inside and outside your company.

  • Appreciation.  There are 5 ways in which people feel loved and appreciated. They are receiving gifts, spending quality time, touch, words of affirmation and acts of service. Each of us are driven by a different need and desire. It's quite possible your team contains a mix of all 5 types. It may not be entirely possibel however the challenge is to find something which potenitally meets all of those needs.

  • Connection. Connection can occur on several levels. Staff, Organisation and Community. If you are wanting to connect staff, use teams to mix them up so they are building relationships with staff from other teams or departments. It can connect staff with the business itself. Providing staff with the opportunity to connect with either the businesses vision and mission or other aspects of the business will help them feel a stronger loyalty to the organisation. The thrid type of connection is about connecting with something bigger. it may be a charity, community group or simply realising how the work they do makes the world a better place. If possible look for an activity or series of activities which connect staff on all three levels.

  • Fun.  Let’s face it.  If you’re going to be taken away from your work, it should be for something that makes you feel good about yourself and the company you work for. It should be fun.  Now, depending on the personality of your team, this could be anything from a still life drrawing classes to a scavenger hunt.  Just be sure that you’re not letting your personal preference for an activity fool you into selecting it for your team; if it does give us a call for some better ideas.

You can run many activities for employee engagement during the course of your tenure.  If you want them to be successful, follow the four steps above, and never under any circumstances have your employees rake your lawn.
